Pattern & appearance
Poured concrete: One continuous surface. The look comes from the finish — smooth troweling, texture, or a stamped pattern — with color chosen before the pour.
Pavers: The look comes from the units themselves — their shape, color mix, and the pattern they're laid in. Borders and accent courses are easy to work in.
Repairs down the road
Poured concrete: Control joints manage where hairline cracks want to go. A damaged area is patched or a section re-poured, and a patch can read slightly different from the original pour.
Pavers: Individual units lift out and swap. Setting aside spares at installation makes a future repair nearly invisible.
Drainage
Poured concrete: Sheds water as a single plane, so the slope of the slab decides where runoff goes — something to plan around near the house or a pool.
Pavers: Joints between units let some water through, and the layout can adapt around drains and grade changes.
Settling & movement
Poured concrete: A rigid slab. It resists movement, but if the ground under it shifts, the slab can't be re-leveled without cutting into it.
Pavers: A flexible surface. If the base settles over time, pavers can be lifted, the base corrected, and the same units re-laid.
